Chapter - 4

Jesus Vallejo Lazaro

Age :- 20 years
Playing position :- Centre-back

'Way to Real Madrid' :-

Vallejo joined the youth academy of his hometown club Real Zaragoza in 2007 aged 10. On 26th July, 2013 he signed a new deal with Zaragoza after impressing in their youth squad.

On 23rd August, 2014 Vallejo made his professional debut for Zaragoza without even playing for their B-Side. On 5th April, 2015 Vallejo captained Zaragoza's senior side aged only 18 years old.

On 31 July 2015, Vallejo signed a six-year contract with Real Madrid for a rumoured €6 million fee, being immediately loaned back to Zaragoza for one year. On 12 July 2016, he left for Bundesliga club Eintracht Frankfurt on a one-year loan deal.

After impressing at Frankfurt last season, Real Madrid called Vallejo back in their squad for upcoming season. On 7th July 2017, Vallejo was presented as a Real Madrid player for the first time at Santiago Bernabeu. Real Madrid gave him number 3 jersey, which was previously worn by Pepe.

'Strengths as a player' :-

Great interceptions and tackles - Vallejo is great when it comes to make interceptions. His awareness and concentration on the opponent with ball helps him a lot here. He keep his focus on the ball and whenever gets a chance he try to make an interception. Another strength of his game is tackling. His timing of tackle is great. He barely foul the opponent while making a sliding tackle. Last season, his performance in one-on-one situation was amazing in Bundesliga. Guy never hesitates in making a tackle and his concentration on the ball while tackling is amazing. And this is the main reason why he does not commit much fouls. Tackling an opponent without fouling him is a must have quality for a world class defender and Vallejo has got that quality.

Apart from defending, Vallejo is good at passing and keeping hold of the ball. He is great in making long passes. A kind of ability that Real Madrid want most of their players to have.

'Weaknesses as a player' :-

Vallejo struggles in aerial duels. He fails in marking man in the box during set pieces and it is a major weakness as per his playing position.

But I don't think we need to worry about it so much. In Real Madrid he will surely learn to head the ball. And why won't he ! he will be around players like Cristiano, Ramos, Benzema, Bale , who are great headers of ball.

'Can he be a great player in future ? Who he can replace in coming years ?' :-

He surely can. He is being touted as the next big name in defensive areas for Spain. He has shown great promise and may make the list of great Spanish defenders along side Puyol, Ramos, Hierro in coming years if he continues to perform like that.

In my opinion he can be a long term replacement for Sergio Ramos. Vallejo has good leading qualities, he is great at defending and is good at passing as well. If he develops some attacking abilities and improve his ball heading skills, he can be a perfect replacement for Ramos.

Vallejo is only 20 years old now and there is a long way to go. A lot of things are there to learn and improve him as much as he can as a player. Hope he cope well with the pressure and make a name for him in Spanish capital.
